What We Do & Why
DIMA's aim is to provide an easy way to find & access, great Australian independent media, with a wide range of topics, approaches, voices & mediums.
Australia’s media is the most concentrated of all world democracies. Ownership of Newspapers, nationally & in our capital cities, is 90% by just two corporations, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and Costello’s Nine Entertainment - both with Right Wing political leanings. 90%!
Murdoch has large ownership & domination of many sectors of our Media, in News; online, print, TV, as well as Real Estate, Food, Travel, Streaming Services, TV Networks, Sports & more, distorting the news, pushing their political agenda, stoking fear & division, to benefit the powerful and well-connected, rather than the average Australian they’re meant to serve.
There are great organisations out there, fighting Murdoch’s domination at the coalface, we’ve the same goals, but are coming at it from the other side - lifting up & making independent, diverse media, easy to locate & support.
So no excuses!
Who Are We?
'We' currently is just ‘I’, Bridie, with 2 dog supervisors, Schnitzel & April. I’m a small business owner in Western Victoria, running an online, retail emergency & safety gear Website
I wanted to find a way to support & lift up Australia’s media diversity & reduce Murdoch's divisional & biased impact. I began building this website & created Twitter account @DirIndimediaAus in June 2022 -created/run by myself, personal time & money.
I've never worked in media & have no financial, personal interests or connections with any media.
Looking to the future, I may implement a system where media listed can make a contribution, currently there’s no charge.
Independent Media Criteria
- Independent media, refers to any news media that is free from influence by the government or other external sources like corporations or influential people.
- This means journalists at these media outlets feel no pressure to shape, change or sanitise their reporting, even if it negatively portrays the government, the opposition, people or other power entities.
- Independent journalism allows unvarnished facts to be shared, it tells & seeks truth, so information may be used to help them decide on important issues, like politicians & policies to support or companies that are acting un/ethically & thus deserve or don’t deserve their business.
- Independent journalism is one of the most important tenets of democracy. When a person, group or government can control what news its citizens consume, they can control what information they have when they cast their vote.
- The criteria for inclusion as ‘Independent’ for DIMA website may vary, be subjective & may change over time, as there is no strict criteria you can quantifiably measure.
- The media listed here, have been assessed as Independent, based on the above definitions & assessments, & a strict criteria will not be given (i.e. maximum size, income, topics etc)
- If you believe one of DIMA’s media listings are not ‘Independent’ please Contact Us, with details, reasons why & we will review your concerns.

Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of this land & especially the Wathaurong People, where DIMA’s offices are situated & as the oldest living culture on the planet We pay our respects to Ancestors and Elders, present and emerging.
As sovereignty was never ceded, DIMA believe it always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
